Five students at Indira Gandhi National Tribal University (IGNTU) in Anuppur, Madhya Pradesh, were booked and expelled for allegedly assaulting an Assamese student. The incident took place on January 13 at around 4 a.m. when the five, reportedly drunk, entered the MA Economics student Hirosh Jyoti Das's hostel room and attacked him. Mr. Das, 22, from Assam’s Sonitpur district, suffered a broken nose and injuries near his eyes and other body parts. An FIR was registered on January 14 against Anurag Pandey, Jatin Singh, Rajnish Tripathi, Vishal Yadav, and Utkarsh Singh, all undergraduate students. They were booked under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Sections 296, 115(2), 351(3), and 3(5), said Anuppur Superintendent of Police Moti Ur Rahman. The SP denied any racial slurs during the attack, stating, “The victim has also not mentioned any such thing in his complaint.” He explained the accused barged in as some used to live in that room before. The IGNTU administration expelled the five accused on January 14 following an internal probe committee's recommendation, giving them 15 days to respond. Meanwhile, Mr. Das expressed fear for his life in a video, saying, “I am scared. Who will protect me if those people attack me again at night? I don’t want to die here the way a Tripura boy was murdered in Dehradun. I am the only son of my family. I want to achieve something in life and not get into such fights.” The investigation continues to gather more details.
