CIA Issues Mysterious Reply on Alien Object 3I/ATLAS as Avi Loeb Raises Questions
January 16, 2026
The interstellar object 3I/ATLAS, first spotted in July last year, drew big attention with strange features like sudden speed changes and color shifts. NASA says it’s a natural comet posing no threat. But Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb disagrees. He claims there is a “30–40% chance” that 3I/ATLAS is a technological object, maybe with an engine. He even calls it “potentially hostile” and ranks it four out of ten on his own “Loeb scale” for alien origin. Loeb wanted answers by Christmas 2023, but none came. Recently, after UFO researcher John Greenewald Jr. asked the CIA for documents on 3I/ATLAS, the CIA replied with a so-called Glomar response — saying it can neither confirm nor deny any records exist. Loeb found this reply “surprising” because NASA had confidently labeled 3I/ATLAS as a natural comet. He wonders why the CIA would classify even the existence of records about the object. Loeb suggests the government might quietly monitor 3I/ATLAS as a rare but serious "black swan" event to avoid public panic. This moves the mystery forward — is 3I/ATLAS just a comet, or a hidden technological visitor?
