NSW Police Shoot Man Armed With Bow and Arrow During Welfare Check in Gunnedah
January 16, 2026
Police in New South Wales shot dead a man armed with a bow and arrow during a welfare check on Friday at 1:40 pm. The incident took place in Gunnedah near Tamworth after authorities received a call expressing concern for the man's welfare. Police say they spoke to the man outside his home. However, he went back inside and returned with a bow and arrow. The officers had to retreat to their vehicle for cover. When the man aimed the weapon at them, the police shot him. Paramedics treated the man, but he was declared dead. This is the third fatal incident involving NSW police so far this year. On January 5, a man died following a medical episode after being pepper-sprayed during his arrest over a domestic violence report in Sydney’s inner west. On January 7, police shot a man believed to be having a mental health episode after a six-hour standoff. The man armed himself with glass and grabbed an officer before being shot. NSW police will conduct a critical incident investigation into the Gunnedah shooting, overseen by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.
