Two Pakistanis Indicted for Illegal Voting and False Citizenship Claims in 2020 US Election
January 16, 2026
Two Pakistani men, Muhammad Muzammal, 37, and Muhammad Shakeel, 62, have been indicted for illegally voting in the 2020 US federal election and making false statements to obtain citizenship. Both were not citizens when they registered to vote in New Jersey. Their registration forms falsely stated they were US citizens. Their applications were approved, and they cast votes in the November 2020 general election despite not being citizens.
After voting illegally, they applied for naturalization to become US citizens. The N-400 form requires applicants to swear that all information is true. In their applications, both lied by saying they never registered to vote or voted in any elections. During the interview under oath, they again denied voting.
The men have lived in the US since 2017 and held permanent legal status under family visas, according to court papers. Their lawyer claimed their innocence. Rizwan M. Kahlid, representing them, said, "Our clients maintain their innocence and are committed to fully cooperating with law enforcement and the judicial system throughout the process. We strongly believe that the facts, once fully presented and examined, will demonstrate that the allegations against our clients are without merit."
