Air India A350 Engine Damaged by Ground Container During Taxiing in Dense Fog
January 15, 2026
On January 15, 2025, an Air India A350, flight AI101 from New Delhi to New York, faced an unusual mishap at Delhi airport. After returning shortly due to Iranian airspace closure, the aircraft encountered trouble while taxiing. Dense fog lowered visibility as the plane moved towards its parking bay. During this time, the right engine ingested a ground container that had toppled onto the taxiway. This caused substantial damage to the engine.
Air India confirmed the incident and said the aircraft was safely parked with no harm to passengers or crew. The airline said, "Flight AI101, operating from Delhi to New York (JFK), was forced to return to Delhi shortly after takeoff due to the unexpected closure of Iranian airspace, which impacted its planned route. Upon landing in Delhi, the aircraft encountered a foreign object while taxiing in dense fog, resulting in damage to the right engine."
The civil aviation ministry provided more details. It stated, "The incident occurred around 05:25 IST. Visibility was marginal. A BWFS tug carrying containers crossed taxiway N/N4 junction, where one container toppled onto the taxiway intersection. This container got ingested in the No. 2 engine of Air India A350 aircraft."
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has launched a probe to find out how this happened. The aircraft was later parked at stand 244. The investigation will focus on safety procedures and how a container could come so close to the taxiing plane. This rare event raises questions about ground operations during low visibility conditions.
