Ukraine Declares Energy Emergency as Russian Strikes Cut Power Amid Harsh Winter
January 15, 2026
Ukraine has declared a state of emergency in its energy sector, focusing on Kyiv, after Russian attacks left many without power during temperatures around -20C. President Volodymyr Zelensky said Moscow is using harsh winter as part of its war strategy. Recently, Russian missile and drone strikes cut power to 70% of Kyiv, leaving thousands without heat or water. Zelensky announced a 24-hour task force to repair damage and bring in energy equipment from abroad. "The First Deputy Prime Minister – Minister of Energy of Ukraine has been assigned to oversee work supporting people and communities under these conditions," he stated on X. Emergency help points will increase in Kyiv, possibly easing the current midnight curfew. Russian strikes also affected over a million people in southeastern Ukraine, cutting heating and water. DTEK, Ukraine's largest private energy firm, said Russian attacks on the power grid are relentless. CEO Maxim Timchenko said repeated missile and drone waves prevent quick recovery. DTEK serves power to 5.6 million Ukrainians amid ongoing crisis. Meanwhile, former US President Donald Trump commented that Ukraine is "less ready to make a deal" in peace talks with Russia. Both leaders are expected at the World Economic Forum next week, though no formal meeting is planned.
