Medical Panel Confirms 15 Deaths from Diarrhoea in Indore Due to Contaminated Water
January 15, 2026
A medical committee set up to check deaths caused by the diarrhoea outbreak in Bhagirathpura, Indore, has confirmed 15 people died after consuming contaminated water supplied by the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC). The five-doctor panel from Mahatma Gandhi Medical College submitted a report to state authorities verifying these deaths, though official figures still show six. Indore Divisional Commissioner Sudam Khade said, "Families of all 15 people have already been given the financial aid of ₹2 lakh each announced by the government." He did not say when the official death count will increase. The panel investigated 21 reported deaths by reviewing medical records, hospital admissions, treatment, death certificates, and medical histories. A Health Department official explained that many victims were cremated without postmortems, making exact cause determination hard. The official added, "Most of the deceased were those with pre-existing illnesses and passed away due to multiple organ failure." Water supply to Bhagirathpura is suspended while civic officials test water quality. Mr. Khade said, "It will be resumed as soon as all the quality parameters are met." The diarrhoea outbreak started on December 29, 2025, affecting over 3,000 people. Tests confirmed the water carried multiple contaminants, likely from leakages in old water and sewage pipelines running close to each other.
