Over 50,000 People in Ernakulam Undergo Hearings to Regain Voting Rights in Special Revision
January 15, 2026
In Ernakulam, hearings to restore voting rights have been held for 51,279 people as of January 14, 2025. This is part of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the state’s voter rolls. The process started on January 6 and covers 14 assembly constituencies. Notices must be issued to 4,71,541 people in the district, and so far, 2,06,306 notices have been generated.
Many family members attend hearings on behalf of others. The Thripunithura constituency leads with 5,919 hearings, followed by Kunnathunad with 5,303 and Thrikkakara with 5,287. Other active constituencies include Perumbavoor (4,457), Ernakulam (4,268), Kochi (4,190), and Piravom (4,030). Kothamangalam has the least, with 1,074 hearings.
A district official said, "Almost all the people who have attended the hearing and produced the required identity proofs have been found eligible to be included in the revised voter roll."
The hearings focus on people on the 'unmapped' list after the SIR enumeration. These voters were in the draft list but couldn't be linked to the 2002 base list for verification.
Thripunithura, Thrikkakara, Ernakulam, and Kochi have more unmapped voters needing verification. The hearings verify documents to confirm identity and residence before the 2002 SIR.
The hearing and verification phase ends on February 14. The final voter list will be published on February 21, 2025.
