Tamil Nadu Nears Malaria Eradication with 33 Districts Reporting Zero Cases
January 14, 2026
Tamil Nadu is moving fast towards wiping out malaria. Over the last three years, 33 out of 38 districts have reported zero local malaria cases. However, Chennai is still battling the disease, making up 37%-45% of cases despite a fall from 173 cases in 2023 to 121 in 2025. Overall, malaria infections in Tamil Nadu dropped sharply from 5,587 in 2015 to 321 last year, as per the Directorate of Public Health (DPH) and Preventive Medicine.
The World Health Organization (WHO) and the National Center for Vector Borne Diseases Control (NCVBDC) want India to be malaria-free by 2030. Tamil Nadu is fully on board with strong efforts to eliminate malaria. The Annual Parasite Incidence in the state is now below 1%, and there have been no outbreaks in the past three years.
A. Somasundaram, Director of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, said, "We are close to eliminating malaria. The number of cases has been coming down. There have been no cases in 33 districts. We are continuing with surveillance measures." He shared that malaria workers collect 100 blood samples monthly for testing and monitor fever cases from Primary Health Centres and Government Hospitals to catch any signs early.
While thirty-three districts have reached 'Category 0' malaria-free status, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, Chengalpattu, Salem, and Greater Chennai Corporation still report cases. Focused preventive steps are ongoing there.
Most recent malaria cases come from outside the state, not local spread. In 2023, 330 of 384 cases were imported; in 2024, 208 of 347; and in 2025, 203 of 321. Officials worry about migrant workers and cross-border movement bringing malaria into Tamil Nadu. Dr. Somasundaram stated, "Individuals who have not received full treatment may continue to be carriers. This is one of our concerns. We have surveillance measures in place, including in construction zones."
The state closely watches migrant labourers from neighboring states who may carry malaria. A national conference to push malaria elimination is set for January 19-21. The NCVBDC Central Monitoring Team will review Tamil Nadu's progress, validate the zero-case districts, and recommend certificates to recognize malaria elimination at the district level.
