UK Imposes Full Sanctions on Iran Amid Deadly Protests and Global Pressure
January 13, 2026
The UK has announced “full and further sanctions” against Iran amid widespread protests causing hundreds of deaths and arrests. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper told MPs that the sanctions will target finance, energy, transport, software, and other major industries. She said the Foreign Office summoned the Iranian ambassador over Iran's harsh response to protests against its regime. Cooper added, “The UK will bring forward legislation to implement full and further sanctions and sectoral measures.” She highlighted that key Iranian players in oil, energy, nuclear, and finance are already sanctioned. The new steps will focus on industries linked to Iran’s nuclear escalation. Cooper spoke to Iran’s foreign minister earlier, expressing the UK’s “total abhorrence of the killings, the violence, and the repression.” She dismissed Iran’s claims that protests were caused by foreign influence as “lies and propaganda,” stating, “The world is watching Iran, and the UK will continue to confront the regime’s lies.” Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump urged Iranians to “keep protesting,” saying “help is on its way.” Trump also announced a 25% tariff on any country conducting business with Iran, angering China, Iran’s top export partner. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the EU will swiftly propose further sanctions against those responsible for the “repression” in Iran. Shadow Foreign Secretary Priti Patel criticized the UK government for not summoning the Iranian ambassador sooner and questioned its resolve to stand with the protesters. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said the Iranian government was in its “final days and weeks,” adding, “If a regime can only keep itself in power by force, then it’s effectively at the end.”
