Delivery platforms Blinkit, Zepto, Zomato, and Swiggy will remove the 10-minute delivery promise from their apps. This follows a strike by gig workers on December 31 demanding the end of such quick delivery targets. Union Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya met with these companies last week and raised concerns about worker health and safety. Although the companies said they achieved fast deliveries by using many warehouses, the Minister urged them to stop this branding practice. Blinkit has already changed its tagline from “10,000+ products delivered in 10 minutes” to “30,000+ products delivered at your doorstep.” Government sources said this step aims to improve safety, security, and working conditions for gig workers. Shaik Salauddin, General Secretary of the Indian Federation of App-Based Transport Workers, praised the government’s move. He said, “The 10-minute delivery model forced delivery partners into dangerous road behaviour, extreme stress, and unsafe working conditions. We welcome and thank Mr. Mandaviya for listening to workers’ voices and intervening decisively in the interest of their safety.” The gig workers had asked the Minister to regulate platform policies and stop the unsafe 10-20 minute delivery pressures. Salauddin called the decision a victory for workers after nationwide strikes and protests across the country from December 25 to 31. He urged platforms to work closely with worker unions when creating policies affecting them. The change comes as a welcome relief for millions of delivery partners who face harsh work conditions under tight time targets.
