Stephen Spencer Pittman, 19, from Madison, Mississippi, has been charged with setting fire to the Beth Israel Congregation synagogue in Jackson. The fire began shortly after 3 am on Saturday, damaging the synagogue’s library and offices. Thankfully, no one was hurt. FBI reports say Pittman admitted to starting the fire because of the synagogue's "Jewish ties." He called it the "synagogue of Satan" during questioning. Security footage shows a masked person pouring gasoline inside the synagogue before lighting the fire. Pittman told police he bought the gasoline at a gas station and removed his vehicle's license plate. His father alerted authorities after receiving a message from him. A burned cell phone and a hand torch were also found. Beth Israel, founded in 1860 and important in civil rights history, was bombed by the Ku Klux Klan in 1967. City leaders called the act a threat to safety and freedom. The synagogue president promised to rebuild with help from local churches. Pittman was treated for minor burns and will face more legal action.
