Mozambique's ‘Miracle Baby’ Born in Floodwaters Dies at 25 After Illness
January 13, 2026
Rosita Salvador Mabuiango, known as the 'miracle baby' born in a tree during Mozambique's worst floods in 2000, died on Monday at age 25 after a long illness. Her sister, Celia Salvador, told the BBC that Rosita had been fighting anaemia for years and was hospitalized for over two weeks before passing away. Rosita's birth became a famous symbol when her mother, Carolina Cecilia Chirindza, climbed a tree to escape rising floodwaters from the Limpopo river. They were rescued by a South African military helicopter during the disaster that forced hundreds of thousands from their homes and killed hundreds.
President Daniel Chapo called Rosita "a symbol for girls in Mozambique" and sent condolences to her family. Rosita grew up in Chibuto, the rural area where she was born, finished high school, and had a daughter five years ago. Political analyst Charles Mangwiro said her death is a "wake-up call for the government to improve service delivery in the entire health system." Despite efforts to hire more health workers, Mozambique still faces shortages of basic drugs and equipment, putting lives at risk.
Chibuto Mayor Henriques Machava said the municipality is arranging the funeral with the family. Rosita's story of survival at birth and her untimely death highlight ongoing health challenges in Mozambique.
