Trump Eyes 'Very Strong' Military Moves as Iran Protests Kill Hundreds
January 12, 2026
US President Donald Trump announced that the US military is looking at "very strong options" in response to the violent protests in Iran. Reports say nearly 500 protesters and 48 security personnel have died during the three weeks of unrest. The Human Rights Activist News Agency (HRANA) has confirmed these deaths, though the real number might be higher according to BBC sources.
Trump said Iranian officials contacted him "to negotiate", but he warned, "we may have to act before a meeting." Meanwhile, Iran labels the protesters as a "bunch of vandals" and called supporters for pro-government rallies. The government declared three days of mourning for those it called "martyrs" killed in a "national battle against the US and Israel," blaming these countries for stirring trouble.
The protests began in late December, sparked by the sudden drop in Iran's currency value, and have challenged the authority of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Trump has not detailed the military options but mentioned talks are planned, noting, "they are tired of being beat up by the United States."
A US source confirmed Trump is briefed on strike options, including military attacks, cyber-warfare, increased sanctions, and online support for protest groups. Despite a crackdown with over 10,600 detained, protests go on, though smaller. Horrifying images from Tehran show 180 body bags and streets "full of blood," with bodies being hastily buried and authorities cleaning up evidence overnight.
Iran has limited internet access since Thursday, making information flow very difficult. Many rely on Elon Musk's Starlink satellites for internet, and Trump plans to discuss restoring internet services with Musk. Iranian authorities have warned that protesters face severe punishments, with some leaders calling them "enemies of God," punishable by death.
Iran's parliament speaker cautioned the US against miscalculations, saying attacks on Iran would target US and Israeli assets. Meanwhile, exiled royal Reza Pahlavi called the protests a major blow to the regime, saying increased violence shows fear of collapse rather than strength.
