January 12, 2026
Mizoram reported 145 deaths due to tuberculosis (TB) in 2025, marking the highest fatalities in six years. Officials from the National TB Elimination Programme under the National Health Mission said 2,275 people, including 911 women, were diagnosed with TB in 2025. This is a slight drop from 2024's 2,291 cases. Of the 2,275 new cases, 1,900 were detected at government facilities and 375 at private centers. TB deaths have been rising steadily since 2020, with 31 deaths that year, increasing each year to 136 in 2024. Among the new cases, 146 were multi-drug-resistant TB (MDR-TB), and 267 patients had both TB and HIV/AIDS. Also, 141 patients were children under 14 years old. About 84% of the patients received successful treatment. Aizawl district reported the most cases with 1,569, followed by Lunglei (155) and Kolasib (138). Serchhip had the fewest cases at 52. Over 100 people have shown support by registering to adopt or donate to TB patients through the online platform Nikshay, part of the Prime Minister's TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan. Officials said, "It is a programme to augment community involvement in meeting India's commitment to end TB and provide additional patient support to improve treatment outcomes for patients and leverage Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities."
