Indian High Commission Celebrates Pongal Festival with 1,500 Migrant Workers in Singapore
January 12, 2026
The Indian High Commission in Singapore hosted a vibrant Pongal festival for nearly 1,500 Indian migrant workers on Sunday, January 11, 2026. The event celebrated the Tamil harvest festival and the start of the Tamil month. High Commissioner Dr. Shilpak Ambule and Tung Yui Fai, Chief of the Assurance, Care and Engagement Group from Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower, joined the festivities.
Held in Sembawang's industrial district, the celebration included live music, traditional dances, yoga, meditation, and a fashion showcase of India’s rich textile heritage. S. Ganesh, lead organiser from Mett.AI, said, “The evening brought together migrant workers, community partners, and volunteers in a vibrant celebration of culture.”
More than 50 local and migrant artists performed, creating electrifying shows that captured the spirit of India’s harvest festivals. Over 110 volunteers, mostly Indian professionals in Singapore, supported the event, making it memorable for workers from construction, marine industries, and domestic help sectors.
This was the second Pongal event held by the High Commission, following activities by the Singapore Indian Heritage Centre on January 10. The Centre offered workshops on Tanjore art, a famous South Indian painting style, allowing participants to learn and create their own art.
Dr. Ambule informed the workers about consular outreach programs, especially passport renewal camps, encouraging their participation. He also thanked the Ministry of Manpower for supporting the migrant community and cooperating with the High Commission to promote their welfare.
The Pongal celebration lit up the evening, blending Tamil traditions with community spirit in Singapore.
