Chhattisgarh Headmistress Suspended Over Exam Question Naming Dog 'Ram'
January 11, 2026
The headmistress of a government school in Chhattisgarh has been suspended following an exam question that caused anger over religious sentiments. The question in a Class IV English paper asked, "What is the name of Mona's dog?" One option was "Ram," which upset people because Lord Ram is a sacred figure in Hinduism.
This question appeared in schools across the Raipur division, first causing trouble in Mahasamund district. Right-wing groups protested strongly, with the Vishwa Hindu Parishad demanding action. A five-member committee was set up to investigate.
Based on the inquiry, Shikha Soni, headmistress of Government Primary School, Nakti, was suspended. Disciplinary proceedings are also underway to dismiss Namrata Verma, a contractual assistant teacher who moderated the paper.
Ms. Soni said the word 'Ram' appeared by mistake instead of 'Ramu' because the letter 'U' was missed during paper preparation. She said, "I had no intention of hurting religious sentiments or insulting any religion or community," and asked for forgiveness.
Ms. Verma explained she kept the options as provided and admitted she failed to notice the word 'Ram'. She expressed regret and promised such errors would not happen again.
Education officials issued warnings to the Block Education Officer and a school principal for poor management in appointing experienced staff for paper setting and moderation.
The controversy has raised concerns over sensitivity and review processes in exam preparation in Chhattisgarh government schools.
