North Korea Claims South Korean Drone Crossed Border, Warns of Consequences
January 10, 2026
North Korea on Saturday accused South Korea of flying drones across their shared border this week. Pyongyang warned Seoul would “pay a dear price” for what it calls repeated violations of its sovereignty. The North Korean military said it used electronic warfare equipment to bring down a South Korean drone flying near a border town. According to North Korea’s Korean People’s Army, the drone had two cameras and filmed areas inside North Korea.
Pyongyang also claimed another South Korean drone entered its airspace on September 27, but it crashed after electronic strikes. Authorities reportedly recovered video data showing “major objects” inside North Korea. The official statement said, “We strongly denounce the hooligans’ serial outrageous encroachment upon our sovereignty.” It added that South Korea’s military “will be surely forced to pay a dear price for their unpardonable hysteria.”
South Korea’s defence ministry rejected the accusations, saying it did not operate any drones at the times mentioned. It also said it does not own the types of drones described by the North. Senior official Kim Hong-Cheol said investigations would be held to check if civilians might have flown drones and stressed that Seoul does not want to provoke Pyongyang.
North Korea showed photos of drone wreckage and aerial images it claimed were taken by the drone near the city of Kaesong earlier this month. South Korean defence minister Ahn Gyu-back stated the drone shown was “not a model operated by our military.” Meanwhile, President Lee Jae Myung’s office announced a national security meeting would be held to address the issue.
