Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced on January 10, 2026, that the state government will hold Thirukkural Week celebrations in January every year. This comes after the silver jubilee of the 133-feet-tall statue of Tamil saint-poet Thiruvalluvar in Kanniyakumari, originally unveiled by former CM M. Karunanidhi on January 1, 2000. Mr. Stalin shared on X that events will include Thirukkural recitations, painting, musical performances, seminars, drama, quizzes, and conferences. These will take place across various districts, involving students, teachers, and the public. The Department of Tamil Development will organise these activities. Key events include a Thirukkural and classical Tamil music festival at Chennai’s Marina Beach on January 11. On January 21, Tiruppur will host the ‘Kuralasiriyar’ conference and quiz programmes. From January 23 to 24, over 1,500 students will participate in the ‘Thirukkural Students Conference’ at Kanniyakumari.
