Storm Goretti Brings Record Winds, Heavy Snow to Germany and France
January 9, 2026
Storm Goretti pounded north-western Europe with fierce winds and heavy snow. In France, gusts peaked at 216kph in Normandy. About 380,000 homes, mainly in Normandy and Brittany, lost power. No major property damage occurred, but one man was seriously hurt after falling from a roof while fixing tiles. Twenty-seven others were slightly injured.
France’s weather agency, Météo-France, warned people to stay indoors. Train services in north-west France stopped on Friday morning, and schools remained closed in the north. Authorities advised residents to prepare emergency lights and drinking water.
Germany is now facing the worst of the storm, called Elli. Heavy snow up to 20cm and strong winds are expected, with temperatures dropping as low as -20°C in some areas. Deutsche Bahn cancelled long-distance trains across northern Germany. Northern regions like Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein are bracing for 15cm or more of fresh snow.
Schools closed and over 700 sanitation workers were deployed in Hamburg to clear streets. Near Bremerhaven, three youths were arrested for throwing ice blocks onto a motorway, hitting several vehicles but causing no injuries. Police urged people to stay home and told drivers to keep fuel, blankets, and water in their cars.
Central and southern Germany expect freezing rain. A bus slipped on ice in Baden-Württemberg, causing minor injuries to three passengers. Berlin and Brandenburg, initially expected to be hit hard, might avoid the worst. A German weather spokesperson said, "We see no danger to life and limb," canceling earlier warnings.
