Russia Uses Rare Oreshnik Missile in Deadly Strikes on Kyiv and Lviv
January 9, 2026
Russia confirmed it used the rare Oreshnik ballistic missile during a massive attack on Ukraine overnight Thursday. Four people died and 25 were injured in Kyiv, where loud explosions lit the sky for hours. It was only the second time Russia used the Oreshnik, first seen in November 2024 hitting Dnipro. Russia’s defence ministry said the strike responded to a Ukrainian drone attack on Vladimir Putin's home in December, which Kyiv denies. Although the exact missile target was not confirmed, videos showed explosions near Lviv west of Ukraine just before midnight. Ukrainian officials said the ballistic missile hit infrastructure there, about 60 km from the Polish border. The Oreshnik is hypersonic and can fly up to 5,500 km. It carries a warhead that breaks into multiple projectiles, causing several explosions in seconds. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called the strike “a grave threat to European security” near NATO’s border and said it responded to Putin's "own hallucinations." The EU questioned whether the drone attack on Putin’s residence happened, and Donald Trump also doubted it. The Thursday night assault used more than a dozen missiles and hundreds of drones on Kyiv. A paramedic died while responding to a damaged apartment during a ‘‘double-tap’’ strike, where rescuers are targeted after initial hits, said Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko. Two apartment blocks by the Dnipro River and a central high-rise were also targeted. The attacks cut power in many Kyiv neighborhoods during a harsh winter heading for -15°C. Russia keeps targeting Ukraine’s power plants, and Ukraine has hit Russian infrastructure in return. Meanwhile, Ukrainian shelling knocked out power for half a million people in Russia's Belgorod region and affected water and heating systems after hitting a power plant in Oryol city.
