US Cities Protest Trump's Venezuela Strike and Maduro's Arrest
January 5, 2026
Protests broke out in many US cities over the weekend against the Trump administration’s military action in Venezuela. The operation targeted Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, who was captured early Saturday. He faces drug trafficking charges in a New York court on Monday. Demonstrators in Chicago, Dallas, New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, San Francisco, and Seattle expressed deep anger and concern about a potential war with Venezuela. Andy Thayer of the Chicago Committee Against War and Racism said, “Whether it’s Saddam Hussein’s Iraq or the Taliban in Afghanistan, Panama, Libya, you name it. Whenever the United States attacks another country like this, it’s the peoples of those countries who suffer the most.” Protesters also criticized Trump for acting without Congress's approval. Senior Democrats called the move unconstitutional, while international leaders said the US broke the United Nations charter. In Seattle, a group called Answer held a rally with signs reading “No Blood for Oil” and “Stop Bombing Venezuela Now!” Organizer Taylor Young stated, “We’re out here to show solidarity with a country whose sovereignty and self determination has been violated by our government using our tax dollars.” Republican lawmakers largely praised Trump. Congressman Tom Emmer said, “God bless this president of peace, Donald J Trump.” Yet, protesters also condemned the deportation of Venezuelans living in the US. Olivia DiNucci from Code Pink said, “We’re creating wars, we’re creating chaos and then simultaneously abducting our neighbors and sending them back to the very countries that we’re destabilizing.” Despite condemning Maduro as a dictator, some activists called for his release. In New York City, protesters gathered outside the detention center and chanted: “Free Maduro right now.”
