BBC Pays £28,000 to Israeli Family After Filming Home Without Permission Post Hamas Attack
January 3, 2026
The BBC has reached an agreement with an Israeli family for filming inside their home without permission after the 7 October 2023 Hamas attacks. A BBC News team, including International Editor Jeremy Bowen, entered the family's badly damaged house near the Gaza border shortly after the deadly attack and filmed personal photos of the children. Many relatives were still unaware if the children had survived. Tzeela Horenstein said her husband Simon survived because the door twisted and jammed when attackers tried to blow it open with explosives. "Not only did terrorists break into our home and try to murder us, but then the BBC crew entered again, this time with a camera as a weapon, without permission or consent," she told the Jewish News. "It was another intrusion into our lives. We felt that everything that was still under our control had been taken from us." The BBC spokesman confirmed they do not usually comment on legal matters but were happy to have settled the case. The corporation paid £28,000 to the family. Since the 7 October Hamas-led attack on southern Israel, which killed about 1,200 people and took 251 hostage, over 71,260 people have died in Israeli strikes on Gaza, according to Hamas-run health sources.
