Craig, Africa’s Iconic Beer-Ambassador Elephant, Dies Aged 54 in Kenya
January 3, 2026
Craig, a famous elephant in Kenya, died at 54 years old on Saturday morning. He lived in Amboseli National Park near the Tanzania border. Conservationists confirmed he died of natural causes. Craig was known for his huge tusks and calm nature. The Amboseli Trust for Elephants said, "Craig had just turned 54 years old. He led a long life and no doubt fathered many calves." Craig was a major attraction at the park. In 2021, he became an ambassador for the popular Kenyan lager brand Tusker. The Kenya Wildlife Service called him an "icon" of conservation efforts. They said, "Craig was one of the last remaining super tuskers in Africa - a rare class of bull elephants whose two tusks weigh over 45kg (100lb) each. Fewer than a handful remain today, making him a living monument to Africa's natural heritage." Craig was loved for his calm nature. The wildlife body added, "Craig was deeply loved for [his] remarkably calm nature," and often let visitors photograph him. Thanks to many protectors, he passed away peacefully. Kenya’s national parks attract millions of tourists yearly and tourism is 10% of the country’s GDP.
