British Teams Aid Ukrainian Amputees with Advanced Rehab and Prosthetics Amid War
January 2, 2026
In Ukraine, dozens of amputees wounded in the war receive treatment at a specialist centre with help from British military medical teams. Vladislav, 31, shares a drone video showing how he lost his left leg near Lyman last August. Before the injury, he was an arbitration lawyer. After the explosion, he saved his life by applying a tourniquet. "That’s me," Vladislav says, pointing at the drone footage from a Russian military channel. The British medics, part of Project Renovator, work alongside Ukrainian staff to offer advanced rehabilitation and prosthetic care. Mike, a British rehab consultant and army lieutenant colonel, says, "The numbers here are truly humbling." He notes Ukrainians are treating nerve injuries faster than he has seen before. Defence Secretary John Healey praised this effort, saying the UK is proud to ensure wounded Ukrainians get the best care. The centre supports patients psychologically, offering group activities like volleyball to boost morale. Vladislav expects a final prosthetic leg soon and is mentally strong despite initial struggles. Another patient, Oleksandr, 48, lost both legs below the knee after an artillery shell. After intense rehabilitation, he hopes to return to work as a fitness trainer. The treatment at this centre will continue long after the war ends, focusing on recovery and new lives for those severely wounded.
