At least two women died and several passengers were injured when a passenger waggon skidded on a wet highway in Noshki, Balochistan, and collided with a truck. The waggon was traveling from Quetta to Chagai near Sher Jan Agha area. Five injured passengers were hospitalized, with two in critical condition in Quetta. Civil Hospital officials reported eight victims from rain-related incidents. The rain, starting Saturday, ended a dry spell in Quetta valley but caused floods, power outages, and mobile network failures. Roads flooded and traffic stopped, while low-lying, poorly built housing suffered water damage. Heavy rainfall affected districts including Ziarat, Pishin, Kalat, Zhob, Mastung, and Sibi. Power outages lasted hours across the region. Meanwhile, experts at a Pakistan Institute of Development Economics seminar warned about the worsening water crisis. Dr. Hifza Rasheed from the Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources said Pakistan’s freshwater per capita dropped from 5,260 cubic meters in 1951 to below 1,000 in 2024. Only 47% of Pakistan's population has access to safe drinking water. Unsafe water causes about 40% of illnesses and many child deaths, highlighting urgent health risks nationwide.
