Three Indian-Origin Men Jailed for Violent Clash at Derby Kabbadi Tournament

Three Indian-origin men have been jailed for a violent clash at a Kabbadi tournament in Alvaston, Derby. The violence erupted on 20 August 2023, just before 4 pm, during the event off Elvaston Lane. Police said reports came in of shots fired and fights using weapons.
Boota Singh, Damanjit Singh, and Rajvinder Takhar Singh were found guilty in a trial in November and sentenced at Derby Crown Court on 19 December. Police showed videos of Boota Singh chasing members of the opposing group. He was not armed then, but police found two machetes in his car two days later. Videos showed Damanjit Singh and Rajvinder Takhar Singh carrying large knives during the disorder.
All three were charged with violent disorder and weapon possession. At trial, Boota Singh, 35, admitted possession of an offensive weapon. Damanjit Singh, 35, was convicted in his absence. Rajvinder Takhar Singh, 42, was also convicted of possession of an offensive weapon.
Sentences given were: Boota Singh - four years; Damanjit Singh - three years and four months; Rajvinder Takhar Singh - three years and ten months.
Two other men went on trial but were found not guilty. Earlier in 2024, seven men were jailed for their part in the same violent incident at Derby Crown Court.
