The 2025 local body polls in Kerala showed a surprising twist in Thiruvananthapuram district. The CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) received more votes than the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF), despite a poor performance statewide. The State Election Commission's data, released December 20, 2025, revealed the LDF had 37.27% of votes (5.10 lakh) in panchayats, while UDF got 35.30% (4.83 lakh) and BJP's NDA 21.59% (2.95 lakh). Independents and others gathered 5.83%. Out of 73 grama panchayats, LDF won 35 and UDF 25. LDF also swept all four municipalities—Varkala, Attingal, Nedumangad, and Neyyatinkara—claiming 40.95% of votes there against UDF's 30.66% and NDA's 23.48%. In the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, the NDA won 50 of 101 seats with 34.52% of votes. But LDF had a slightly higher vote share of 34.65% and 29 seats, while UDF trailed with 26.28%. The election in Vizhinjam ward was postponed to January 12. Across Kerala, elected local body members will be sworn in on December 21. Elections for key posts like Mayors and Panchayat presidents are scheduled for December 26 and 27.
