Telangana Excise Cracks Down on Illegal Liquor, Boosts Sales Amid Festival Rush
December 20, 2025
With the festive season at its peak, Telangana Excise and Prohibition Department is tackling rising liquor demand with strict enforcement and better supply management. Officials warn of increased smuggling of illegal liquor and drugs from states like Delhi, Haryana, and Goa. Shahnawaz Qasim, Director (Enforcement), said the focus is on stopping non-duty paid liquor (NDPL) and synthetic drugs, which surge during year-end.
From the weekend till December 31, about 20 inter-State border checkposts and four mobile patrol units will watch key routes, especially around Hyderabad, Medak, and Mahabubnagar for illegal liquor. Khammam and other districts near Odisha will be checked for ganja trafficking. Railway and highway inspections have also been stepped up, focusing on trains and roadways linking those states.
The State Task Force is monitoring Hyderabad, Secunderabad, and Rangareddy, targeting illegal parties and farms where drug use is worrying. Meanwhile, liquor supply is ramped up to meet a sales jump from ₹100-120 crore daily to nearly ₹150 crore in late December.
Telangana has 2,620 liquor shops and 1,171 bars with over 1,000 liquor varieties. Liquor sales have already risen 20% by December 20, aided by Gram Panchayat elections. Top-selling districts include Warangal, Nalgonda, Nizamabad, and Mahabubnagar. Typically, Telangana sells ₹3,000 crore liquor monthly, but December sales may reach a whopping ₹5,000 crore thanks to Christmas and New Year celebrations.
