8 Dead in Russian Missile Strike on Odesa Port; Ukraine Hits Russian Oil Rig and Ship
December 20, 2025
Eight people died and 27 were wounded when Russian missiles struck the port infrastructure in Odesa, southern Ukraine, late Friday, according to Ukraine's Emergency Service. Some injured were on a bus at the strike's center. Trucks caught fire and cars were damaged in the parking lot. The attack used ballistic missiles, said Oleh Kiper, head of the Odesa region. Russia has not confirmed the strike. The Russian Defense Ministry said it hit "transport and storage infrastructure" used by Ukrainian forces, along with energy and Kyiv war support facilities. Meanwhile, Ukraine's General Staff reported drone strikes on Russian targets. The nighttime attack hit the patrol ship "Okhotnik" in the Caspian Sea near an oil and gas platform. A drilling platform at the Filanovsky oil field, operated by Lukoil, was also struck. Ukraine also targeted a radar system in Crimea, annexed by Russia in 2014. No immediate response came from Russia or Lukoil. The strikes come amid US sanctions on Russian oil giants Lukoil and Gazprom to cut Moscow's war funding. Kyiv says it aims to disrupt oil exports fueling the Kremlin's invasion, now nearing its fifth year.
