Taslima Nasreen Says Dipu Chandra Das Was Innocent After Lynching Over Blasphemy in Bangladesh
December 20, 2025
Dipu Chandra Das, a 25-year-old Hindu garment worker, was lynched and burned by a mob in Bangladesh on December 18 over false blasphemy charges. Exiled author and human rights activist Taslima Nasreen said Dipu was "innocent and falsely accused of blasphemy." She blamed a Muslim co-worker's false claim for the violence. Despite police custody, the mob brutally attacked Dipu. Nasreen shared, "The mob pounced on Dipu like hyenas and began to tear him apart." She questioned the police's role, asking, "Did the police throw Dipu back to those fanatics or did the mob take Dipu out of the station?" Describing the killing, Nasreen called it "a jihadist festival," with Dipu beaten, hanged, and burned. Dipu was the sole earner for his disabled family, and Nasreen asked who would support them now. Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus said Rapid Action Battalion arrested seven suspects linked to the lynching. The Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council condemned the killing, calling it an attack on communal harmony. The interim government led by Yunus condemned the violence, saying "there was no space for such violence in the new Bangladesh" and promised no mercy for the culprits. Police reported Dipu was beaten outside his factory, hanged from a tree, and then burned near the Dhaka–Mymensingh highway, causing traffic stoppage. His autopsy is complete, but tensions remain high. This lynching comes amid rising violence after the assassination attempt and death of protest leader Sharif Osman bin Hadi in December, which has triggered unrest and concerns over minority safety in Bangladesh.
