Eight elephants were killed and one injured after a herd was hit by the Sairang-New Delhi Rajdhani Express in Assam’s Hojai district early on Saturday, December 20, 2025. A forest official said the accident happened around 2:17 am at Changjurai area in Hojai. Five coaches and the train’s engine derailed. Fortunately, no passengers were hurt, a Northeast Frontier Railway spokesperson confirmed. Trains passing through the Jamunamukh–Kampur section are now rerouted via the UP line. Forest officer Suhash Kadam and other officials reached the site to monitor the situation. The Sairang-New Delhi Rajdhani Express runs between Sairang near Aizawl in Mizoram and Anand Vihar Terminal in Delhi. Restoration work on the rail track is ongoing.
