Ernakulam Congress Protests Viral Parody Song Case, Cites Freedom of Expression
December 19, 2025
The Ernakulam District Congress Committee (DCC) held a big protest on December 19 against the case filed over the parody song 'Pottiye Kettye.' This song is viral on social media. Party workers and leaders sang it together at 155 centres in the district to show their dissent. The protest started at Menaka Junction, led by Congress Legislative Party deputy leader K. Babu, MLA. Mr. Babu criticised the Kerala government, saying their action "exposed the true face of the Chief Minister and the government," who usually claim to support freedom of expression. He said Kerala was always a state open to creative freedom but now ruled by a government that does not tolerate disagreement. He highlighted the irony that the government acted against a simple parody song while earlier protesting against the denial of permission for some films at the International Film Festival of Kerala in the name of freedom. Mr. Babu warned that if the government kept fighting the song, it would only harm its own image. He added, "democratic Kerala would continue to sing it." Several leaders joined the protest including DCC president Muhammed Shiyas, Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee vice presidents V.P. Sajindran and Jaison Joseph, general secretary I.K. Raju, and others. The protest reflects growing tension over free speech and dissent in Kerala politics.
