Supreme Court Takes Up Woman Advocate’s Plea on Noida Police Custodial Assault, Orders CCTV Preservation
December 19, 2025
On December 19, 2025, the Supreme Court sought responses from the Centre, Uttar Pradesh government, and others on a plea filed by a woman advocate. She claimed she faced illegal detention and custodial sexual assault at the Sector 126 police station in Noida. A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and N.V. Anjaria ordered the Gautam Buddha Nagar police commissioner to ensure that CCTV footage from the police station during the incident is preserved and sealed. The advocate alleged she was held for 14 hours and mistreated by police while working for her client late on December 3. Senior advocate Vikas Singh called the case "very gross," saying, "This is a very gross case happening right around Delhi. If it is happening in Noida, just imagine the plight of the entire country." The Court noted it usually would direct her to the high court but agreed to hear the case due to serious allegations and issues with CCTV cameras. The court will further hear the petition on January 7. The plea detailed threats against the advocate, including a government pistol being placed on her neck and coercion to share her phone password. It also alleged police disabled CCTV cameras and blocked FIR registration. The petitioner demanded FIR registration against the police involved and investigation by a Special Investigation Team or the CBI. The Supreme Court's swift action aims to ensure evidence is preserved and sends a message that such incidents will not be tolerated.
