US Embassy Warns Against Travel Near Thailand-Cambodia Border After Fighting Resumes
December 18, 2025
The US embassy has issued a travel alert for its citizens, asking them to avoid the Thailand-Cambodia border area. This comes after fighting restarted between Thailand and Cambodia following the collapse of a peace deal mediated by former US President Donald Trump.
The alert says, "The US Embassy is monitoring reports of significant escalation in the conflict along the Thailand-Cambodia border. Both sides continue to report cross-border fire, and conditions remain volatile." It advises US citizens to avoid traveling within 50 kilometers of the border due to ongoing hostilities and unpredictable security.
"The US government has limited ability to provide emergency services in affected provinces," the embassy noted. It urged people near the area to follow instructions from Thai security forces and local authorities for safety updates.
The conflict is centered on disputed territory around ancient temples, including the culturally important Preah Vihear temple. After deadly clashes in July 2025, both sides blamed each other for violence. There was a ceasefire and a peace deal later that year, but fighting resumed again in December.
Thai forces said they destroyed a bridge Cambodia used to move heavy weapons and targeted artillery in Cambodia’s Koh Kong province. Trump said he spoke with Thailand’s caretaker Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian premier Hun Manet, who agreed to "cease all shooting".
Thailand says it is open to a diplomatic solution but wants Cambodia to stop hostility first. With the situation still unstable, the US embassy’s warning highlights the risk to travelers near the conflict zone.
