Oscars to Stream Exclusively on YouTube from 2029, Ending ABC Run
December 18, 2025
The Academy Awards will stop airing on ABC and start streaming exclusively on YouTube from 2029. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced a multi-year deal giving YouTube global rights to the Oscars through 2033. For nearly 50 years, ABC has broadcast the awards. Starting March 15, 2029, Oscars fans can watch the show live and free on YouTube. This change comes amid big shifts in Hollywood, like studio sales and production cuts. Academy CEO Bill Kramer and President Lynette Howell Taylor said, "The Academy is an international organization, and this partnership will allow us to expand access to the work of the Academy to the largest worldwide audience possible — which will be beneficial for our Academy members and the film community." After prize show ratings dropped in 2025, including for the Golden Globes and Grammys, this move aims to reach more viewers. YouTube CEO Neal Mohan called the Oscars "one of our essential cultural institutions" and said the deal will "inspire a new generation of creativity and film lovers while staying true to the Oscars' storied legacy." ABC said it is "looking forward to the next three telecasts" before the switch.
