The Karnataka High Court on Wednesday directed the Ministry of Railways not to cut any trees at the Cantonment Railway Colony near Cantonment Railway Station, Bengaluru, without permission. The court's order came from a Division Bench of Chief Justice Vibhu Bakhru and Justice C.M. Poonacha. This was in response to a public interest litigation filed by former MLA A.T. Ramaswamy and three others. They challenged the State government's December 16, 2025 notification that withdrew an earlier September 10, 2025 order. The earlier order had declared an 8.61-acre green area with 371 trees as a biodiversity heritage site under the Biological Diversity Act, 2002. During the hearing, Additional Solicitor-General K. Arvind Kamath said the State government withdrew the notification because it was issued without the Central government's consent. Kamath added that Railways had only applied for permission to cut some trees and the petition was premature. The court recorded these submissions and adjourned the next hearing to February 13, 2026.
