UAE Changes School Admission Age Cut-Off to 31st December From 2026–27
December 17, 2025
The UAE has updated its school admission rules for Kindergarten and Grade 1 starting in the 2026–2027 academic year. Now, children must meet the age cut-off by 31st December of the admission year. Before this, the deadline was 31st August. This change applies to all schools beginning their year in August or September. Schools starting in April will keep their 31st March cut-off. The age limits are: 3 years for Pre-Kindergarten, 4 years for Kindergarten 1 (KG1), 5 years for Kindergarten 2 (KG2), and 6 years for Grade 1, all by 31st December. These stages match British, French, and other international education systems. Current students will continue under the old rules. The decision came after a detailed review using data from over 39,000 students. It showed younger children enrolling early did as well or better academically than older ones. The study stressed that readiness depends on many development skills, not just age. The goal is to make admission fairer and support smoother moves between different curriculums like British, American, or others. The Education, Human Development and Community Development Council led the update with help from schools, experts, and parents. The Ministry of Education praised the teamwork. This policy change shows the UAE’s focus on high-quality education that matches children’s growth and international standards.
