Five People Trampled to Death by Wild Elephants in Jharkhand in One Day

Five people, including two women, were trampled to death by wild elephants in Jharkhand in the past 24 hours, officials confirmed on Wednesday, December 17, 2025. Three deaths occurred in the Sirka forest area in Ramgarh district. Another person, aged 36, was killed at Jidu village in Ranchi’s Angara area on Tuesday night, December 16. "Some of the deceased are yet to be identified. Two quick response teams (QRTs) and forest guards are tracking the movement of elephant herds in the area," said Nitish Kumar, divisional forest officer, Ramgarh. On Tuesday afternoon, Amit Kumar Rajwar, 32, was trampled to death in Ramgarh after he approached a herd of eight wild elephants to take selfies and record a video, Mr. Kumar added. Currently, 42 wild elephants are roaming forests near the Ramgarh and Bokaro district border in groups. Gautam Kumar Rajwar, Angara police officer-in-charge, reported that a man named Sanicharwa Munda died during treatment. Two others, including a woman, are injured and being treated in hospital. The authorities warned people to stay away from elephant herds amid these attacks.
