Bondi Beach Gunman Sajid Akram Hailed from Hyderabad, Family Unaware of Radicalisation
December 17, 2025
Sajid Akram, the alleged gunman killed by police during the Bondi beach attack, was originally from Hyderabad, India, police confirmed. Akram, 50, moved to Australia in 1998 after earning a commerce degree in Hyderabad. He married a European-origin woman and had two children. His family in India was unaware of his radical mindset, says Telangana police. Akram traveled to India six times for family matters but never returned after his father's death. Police also revealed Akram and his 24-year-old son Naveed, the alleged accomplice now critically hospitalized, traveled to the Philippines last month. The purpose of this trip and any connection to terrorist groups remains under investigation. Neighbors in Hyderabad described Akram’s family as quiet and law-abiding, with no criminal history. Authorities continue probing the attack and the men’s possible links but found no evidence of radicalisation linked to India. The community in Bondi mourned the victims, including 10-year-old Matilda, with grief-filled gatherings.
