At least six children in Satna district, Madhya Pradesh, tested HIV positive after receiving blood transfusions at the district hospital. The children, five boys under 11 and a nine-year-old girl, were undergoing treatment for thalassaemia, a condition requiring frequent transfusions. They tested positive between January and May 2025, but the issue surfaced publicly only now. Deputy Chief Minister and Health Minister Rajendra Shukla said, "We will only be able to reveal anything once the report comes. It is also being investigated whether the blood transfusion took place in other hospitals also or only in the government hospital." Satna Collector Satish Kumar S. confirmed an internal investigation at the hospital. He added, "The children have received transfusions at different hospitals, including the district hospital, Jabalpur, and private hospitals. But if anyone is found responsible, strict action will be taken." Dr. Manoj Shukla, Chief Medical and Health Officer, explained, "Because they develop a history of multiple transfusions, they come into high risk category for HIV. So, the programme head of AIDS here conducted further tests on them and their treatment was started immediately." He also revealed that the children are "fine now" and noted that the parents of one child were already HIV positive. Dr. Shukla mentioned possible infection sources beyond transfusions, including intravenous injections or contaminated syringes. He stated that blood bank protocols were followed, but early-stage infections in donors might escape detection. Efforts to test donors are underway, though some children received over 125 transfusions, making tracing difficult. A senior hospital doctor anonymously told The Hindu that hospital officials were not informed about the positive tests four months ago and that the administration learned about the issue via local media. The Opposition Congress criticized the ruling BJP over the matter. Congress MLA Sachin Yadav demanded Health Minister Rajendra Shukla's resignation and called for a murder case against those responsible for the incident.
