A lone child walks amid rubble in Gaza's Khan Younis, showing the huge destruction after war. This image is part of a photo collection by S.S. Santhosh Kumar, leader of the United Nations Emergency Medical Team. His photos are featured at the Kozhikode Lalithakala Akademi Art Gallery, thanks to the Palestine Solidarity Committee. Dr. Kumar, a firsthand witness, said the city was once Gaza's second-largest but became a pile of ruins in two years. The exhibition shows harsh realities, including detailed pictures of injuries in hospitals. All pictures were taken on Dr. Kumar's cellphone while he led medical efforts in the war zone. He said, "It was the pungent smell of sewage that first hit me as I crossed the border from Egypt into Gaza." The photos reveal the severe damage to homes and services. Dr. Kumar pointed out, "A single toilet was intended for use by 1,500 people. Those in need did not even dare look at the length of the queue." Dr. Kumar has worked worldwide with Médecins Sans Frontières and the UN. Writer C.V. Balakrishnan opened the exhibit on December 15. It is open daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. until December 22.
