LDF Loses Seats but Gains Vote Share in Thiruvananthapuram Corporation Polls
December 16, 2025
The Left Democratic Front (LDF) lost more than 20 seats in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation local body polls but is finding some hope in its vote share, which actually increased. Communist Party of India (Marxist) sources say the United Democratic Front's (UDF) poor votes helped the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) win many seats. In over 40 of the 50 BJP-won wards, the UDF came third. In 25 wards, the UDF got less than 1,000 votes, and in some even less than 500. This UDF weakness gave BJP narrow victories on many seats. CPI(M) leader John Brittas tweeted that comparing the 2024 Lok Sabha votes and 2025 local polls shows the BJP's votes dropped from 2,13,214 to 1,65,891 while UDF votes fell from 1,84,727 to 1,25,984. Meanwhile, LDF votes rose from 1,29,048 to 1,67,522. Mr. Brittas added that those claiming a "historic performance of the BJP," including Congress Working Committee member Shashi Tharoor, are ignoring the real vote figures. Voting patterns differ between Lok Sabha and local elections, but these numbers show the LDF’s actual vote gain despite seat losses.
