On December 16, the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) launched a new initiative to adopt stray dogs and puppies. The event held at Town Hall saw many animal lovers and NGO members from People For Animals (PFA) coming forward to adopt healthy dogs. Senior MCC officials, animal welfare activists, and the Animal Husbandry Department supported the event. MCC said adoption is the most humane way to manage the growing street dog population. They want more families to adopt sterilised and vaccinated adult dogs and puppies. MCC Commissioner Sheikh Tanveer Asif described stray dogs as "resilient, intelligent, and capable of becoming an integral part of families by offering companionship and security." He added, "They are affectionate and pleasing animals." The Commissioner highlighted numbers, saying Mysuru has about 10 lakh people and two lakh houses. The city’s street dog population is estimated at 50,000. "If just one in four households adopts a street dog by providing food and shelter, the issue of street dogs can be addressed," he pointed out. Mr. Asif asked people to support both active adoption, by taking dogs home, and passive adoption, by backing the MCC’s dedicated street dog facility at Rayankere. "Adoption is not only humane but also a social cause," he said. The launch event included MCC Health Officer Dr. Venkatesh, PFA’s Savita Nagabhushan, Assistant Director of Animal Husbandry Dr. Poornada, retired Deputy Director Dr. Tirumalesh, and retired veterinary doctor Dr. Suresh. This drive hopes to bring relief to Mysuru’s streets and offer loving homes to stray dogs.
