BJP Demands Karnataka Govt Action on Mosque Loudspeaker Noise Pollution
December 16, 2025
BJP members in Karnataka's Legislative Council raised a loud alarm on December 16 about noise pollution from mosque azaan calls. BJP member D.S. Arun complained about his family's disturbance from regular loudspeaker use near his home in Shivamogga. "The volume of loudspeakers in mosques has gone up in recent days. The Congress government has no guts to take action against people using loudspeakers at mosques," he said, sparking heated debate. Fellow BJP members C.T. Ravi, Bharathi Shetty, N. Ravi Kumar, and Keshava Prasad demanded strict enforcement of noise rules as per Supreme Court orders. They pointed out that while the government banned DJ music during Ganesha celebrations, mosque loudspeakers run year-round. However, treasury bench members accused BJP of politicizing the issue. Environment Minister Eshwar Khandre clarified, "The rules are the same for all." Karnataka has formed district committees including police and pollution board officials to test and act on noise complaints at religious sites. The government mandates loudspeaker use only between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m., with maximum noise levels capped under the Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rule, 2000. Khandre urged public awareness on noise pollution's harms and said violations will be punished. The debate highlights rising tensions around religious noise and law enforcement in Karnataka.
