Two Arrested in Hyderabad Over Deaths of Auto Drivers from Stolen Anesthesia Drug
December 11, 2025
Hyderabad police arrested two men linked to the deaths of two auto drivers who collapsed and died after injecting Atranium 25 mg, an anesthesia drug, near Farooq-e-Azam Masjid in Chandrayangutta. The arrested are Choude Akash, 23, a ward boy at ABS Hospital, and Jarpati Shiva Shankar, 19, also an auto driver. Yamjala Kalyan, 23, a band player, is also implicated.
Police have booked neuro-surgeon S. Jaipal Reddy, chairman of ABS Hospital, and Mohammed Vikaruddin, a student nurse, for negligence in handling these controlled drugs. Reddy had ordered 25 vials of Atranium for surgery on November 26; four were used, but the rest were left unsecured in the operating theatre. Vikaruddin failed to ensure proper storage, allowing Akash to steal the ampoules.
On December 3, Jahangir Khan, 25, and Syed Irfan, 29, were found unconscious after self-administering the drug. Investigation showed they tried to get a Termin injection but received Atranium instead. Both men collapsed and died on the spot.
Kalyan admitted to regularly getting such injections from suppliers and told police he bought the ampoules for ₹2,000 on the night of the incident. Shankar, nicknamed Chintu, confessed to sourcing Atranium through Akash and selling it onward.
Akash stole the ampoules from ABS Hospital’s operating theatre on November 26 and hid them at home. He has a history of substance addiction and was previously removed from MNJ Cancer Hospital after a drug incident. He had been working at ABS Hospital since November 15.
Senior South East Zone officials praised Chandrayangutta police for quickly solving the case. A reward has been recommended for the officers involved.
