Hundreds of Sharks Create Feeding Frenzy at Byron Bay, Australia
December 10, 2025
An abundance of baitfish has drawn hundreds of sharks to the shallow waters around Byron Bay, Australia, causing dramatic natural scenes. Blacktip whalers, dusky whalers, and bull sharks attacked a huge school of fish at Tallow Beach. Local photographer Jakob de Zwart captured footage from his drone showing around 100 sharks herding the baitfish in shallow, knee-deep water. Adam Smith, a marine expert from James Cook University, said Australians were lucky to witness such a wild spectacle close to town. However, both Smith and Bond University’s Daryl McPhee warned that the water was unsafe for people during this event. Swimmers and snorkelers spotted near the sharks risk dangerous bites as the predators are in feeding mode. The baitfish disappeared yesterday, and the sharks left, leaving the beach “back to normal,” said de Zwart.
