India Post Unveils DHRUVA to Revolutionize Digital Addressing with Consent and Precision
December 9, 2025
The Department of Posts has proposed a new system called DHRUVA — Digital Hub for Reference and Unique Virtual Address. It assigns easy-to-use digital labels like email IDs to addresses. This helps standardize addresses and improve delivery services. India Post will use DIGIPIN, a 10-digit location code that marks every 12 square meters in India. DHRUVA will work like Aadhaar and UPI by allowing users to share verified addresses via consent. It benefits logistics, e-commerce, and users by providing both descriptive addresses and exact geo-codes. The framework involves Address Service Providers, Validation Agencies, and a governance body similar to NPCI. Users can update their addresses easily and control access through a consent system. This makes address sharing safer and more efficient. Critics question if DHRUVA will help urban governance since addresses link to people, not buildings. Incomplete data might limit planning benefits. Still, DHRUVA promises to make digital address sharing seamless, secure, and precise across India.
